“Since 2008, I’ve been the “Your Money” columnist for The New York Times, where my columns about student loans won the 2011 Loeb award, business journalism’s highest honor, in the personal finance category.

Before coming to The Times, I wrote the “Green Thumb” column for The Wall Street Journal’s Money & Investing section and was part of the start-up team at the paper’s Personal Journal section in 2002. I’ve also been on the staff of Fortune and Fast Company magazines and was an intern at the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, Mass.

My first book “Taking Time Off: Inspiring Stories of Students Who Enjoyed Successful Breaks from College and How You Can Plan Your Own,” co-authored with Colin Hall, was a New York Times bestseller in 1996. I also wrote “Upstart Start-Ups,” a book for young entrepreneurs, and was the co-author of a guidebook to the best entry-level jobs in the United States.

I graduated from Francis W. Parker in Chicago, where I was on financial aid my last few years. Amherst College helped with scholarships too, and I graduated in 1993. My home is in Park Slope, Brooklyn, where I live with my wife Jodi Kantor, a fellow New York Times reporter and the author of the 2012 New York Times bestseller “The Obamas,” and our nine year-old daughter.

The Opposite of Spoiled,” published in February, 2015, was an instant New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller.”
